I'll be up visiting relatives in the Bay Area during Thanksgiving,
and wondered if we could get together on Friday morning the 25th.
I would like to know what you have been up to lately, and talk
with you about SCORE. I've been attending the meetings of the ANSI
working group on music notation, and I would also like to discuss its
work with you.

I'll be out of town from this Thursday through Sunday, but I can
respond to e-mail when I get home.

Hope I can see you.

Craig and Rick,

Don Byrd says he was pretty interested in having Keith Hamel's
(Kingston, Ont.) paper on the Notation Session. What do you
think? Actually, since Computers and Learning only has 4 papers
we could probably handle 6 papers on Notation, which is immediately
before. Was it your impression that it was a loser, or did it
	have merit?

It was a pleasure to meet you today. I think your music
printing software is exactly what we need.

We would like to try to output one of the pages you prepared on a
Linotronic. What do you think the best means of transferring the Postscript
file would be? If one of the files you prepared will fit on a floppy
disk (we can read AT disks, as I mentioned) perhaps the best way would
be for you to send a disk by US Mail. Otherwise, perhaps you could
upload it to a publically acessible directory on SU-AI and I can get
it by anonymous ftp. My US Mail address is 650 Calmar, Oakland CA 94610.

We will be happy to pay for any expenses involved, and of course also
would be happy to pay you for your time in entering the data to create
the file.

Thanks very much for your interest in our project.

Leland,

I am on the Technical Staff at Adobe and I have worked with Cleo a
great deal during the development of the music font we are producing.
Among other things, I wrote a few PostScript routines for setting music
that do simple things like construct beams and slurs (simple in the
sense that they will draw them, not in the sense that they have any
preconceived notion of *where* to draw them). The routines also impose
a staff-based coordinate system which makes placement of notes much
easier and more intuitive. Cleo used just these PostScript routines to
produce the sample of Bach's Sonata II that you might have seen.

Cleo mentioned that you have under development a tool for interactively
editing music (apparently based on years of research) that will now
produce PostScript vector output, and I am most interested in finding
out a little more about it. It occurred to me that it might be
possible to include in your PostScript output a mechanism that could
check the printer to see if Adobe's music font was already downloaded,
and in that case use some of the characters in it as alternatives for
your vector output.

There are various advantages to using fonts over raw PostScript on a
PostScript printer. One is that the shapes are "cached" when they are
rendered, and if a shape is used more than once, it will significantly
increase the printing speed (factors of 10 or more for the character
shapes). Another advantage is that the font machinery takes greater
care than the line-drawing machinery in paying attention to line
weights and pixel round-off. Thus stems and staff lines, for instance,
will always be the same thickness, regardless of their position on the
page (you may have noticed some of them being a pixel wider than others
when using "stroke"). Another advantage over pure vectors is that the
curves are rendered as bezier cubic sections, which will be converted
to vectors at the resolution of the printer--this means NO jaggies on a
typesetter, whereas vectors will render the same way on either device.

Anyway, since you are recognized as being one of the pioneers in
computer music publishing, and since you are right down the street, I
thought it would be worthwhile to discuss these issues with you. Aside
from any encouragement for you to use our music font, I would be
interested in giving you as much support as you needed to write a
PostScript driver for your project. After all, we developed PostScript
in the first place, and it is our primary objective to encourage its
use. And I happen to think that a music-setting application like yours
would be a perfect place to exercise PostScript to its limits.

I would be most interested to learn more about what you are working
on. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Well, I admit the message is a little misleading, but that's because it
doesn't know what command, and hence what device, you are going to be
using. It types the message for "MTA0", which you had MTA1 assigned as,
so that's why it said what it did. Perhaps you tried to append data to
a tape that was already started at 6250, or perhaps you restarted BART
without giving the DENSITY command after you saw the misleading message.

the instructions from before. I've forgotten them myself, except
I think the command you want is UCOPY (preceded by any density

(I can't figure out how to get mail to CCRMA so I'll understand if you don't
get this in time)

I will be in Palo Alto Monday afternoon and would like to say hi ( I will
actually be there all week but don't know if I will have other free time ).
DEC is sending me to a course on PostScript at Adobe Systems. I have also
been in touch with Cleo Huggins there regarding a music font.

How's the music scoring? This morning I saw a demo at Berklee School of Music
put on by Kurt Maas from Munich. It is a batch scoring system with a
SCORE-like alphanumeric input language and a various drivers to handle an
Anadex dot-matrix printer, HP7475A vector plotters, and Monotype laser
typesetter. They use two PDP-11 systems, one an 11/23 for serial line I/O
processing (including MIDI) and an 11/73 for everything else. They run under
IDRIS (a UNIX derivative) and utilize a custom Q-bus board which they will
sell for $2000+ (the board adapts RS-232 boards to MIDI via a separate clock
and signal level converters, and has a PROM presumably for booting the
memory-only 11/23 cpu). They want $5K+ for various pieces of software needed
to do different things; their overall package, before buying the pdp-11
equipment to run it on, is about $25000.

I have adapted Don Byrd's SMUT program to run under MS-DOS, driving either
the cheap $150 CGP-115 plotter from Radio Shack, or generating a device
independent metafile. Would you like a copy to play with? How's the Tandy
2000 stuff going? Anyway, hope to see you out there.

I've got another version of Bart up, with some things improved. I should
explain to you how it handles errors (it's fairly simple). It still doesn't
handle physical end-of-tape on the output tape particularly well, but that
will come soon. I think it's usable....

I will be at my office around 9am Friday, till about 10am. If you show
up during that time, I'll explain what you have to do to use the program.
It will require careful intervention at the end of an output tape.

∂26-Jul-85 0136	ME tape copy
I'm sorry, but the tape copy program isn't quite ready to be used.
Furthermore, the tape drives aren't ready to be used for copying
because we're having some problems on both of the old drives. Those
problems are what have kept me from finishing up the program, which
is mostly ready.

∂26-Jun-85 1452	ME copying tapes
You want to copy from 800 bpi on the old drives to 1600 bpi on the new drive,
right? (maintaining Dart format) You don't want 6250 bpi output tapes, right?

Did you get my holiday greetings? I have been working with the PDP-11

Do you have plans for commercial development of this system? I would
be interested in assisting. I have been following the work of Bernard
Mont-Reynaud, and talked with him in Paris. There was some discussion
of taking over the PARC Mockingbird project. I have heard this facile
rumor from several people who claim Xerox might let them "have it",
including Bill Buxton. I have never seen anything actually happen,
however. Do you know anything about this?
Don Byrd of SMUT fame has been working for Kurzweil for some time. They
plan on doing a Mac-based scoring system for use with their 250
synthesizer, starting this spring or summer. Several packages have
already come out for the Macintosh; I have not tried any of them. I
think a very serious system could be built around the Silicon Graphics
system but it is very expensive. Jean-Pierre Armand and Don Byrd met
with the syndicate of French publishers and interest was expressed in
developing a system, but no one could say where the 1,000,000F funding
would come from. A similar meeting was apparently held with New York
publishers including Boosey-Hawkes, sort of on behalf of Kurzweil, but
funding was not committed. Is any of this new or interesting? I really
think you should be a part of these developments if you are inclined.
I am also in touch with Orion Crawford, a transcriber/arranger in L.A.
who you may have heard of. He has been trying to approach Xerox for
years. He has some good front-end ideas, but is lacking in computer
expertise. Anyway that's what I know, hope this mail gets through our

I would like to request your permission to use the RT11 version of MSS
to generate output for a portion of my paper to go in the ICMC
proceedings from the Paris conference. The paper is entitled "Quality
Music Printing on a $200 Plotter" and talks about hardware and software
interfacing concerns for the Radio Shack model CGP-115 pen plotter.
This is a tiny 4-color drum plotter which uses 4-inch paper (it is
actually a deal less then $200 now). My purpose in using MSS would be
to show alternative results using two different music printing programs.
The other one I have is SMUT by Don Byrd. As mentioned previously,
David Wessell supplied me with your program at IRCAM and I have written
a relatively device-independant output interface for it. I would be
glad to send you any of my work if you are interested. Looking forward
to hearing from you, hope all is well at CCRMA and Stanford.

Hi, I'm using David Wessel's account. Sorry you couldn't make it to this
conference; I'm really enjoying seeing this place and visiting Paris. The
11/40 is under the stairs in the hallway and on it's way out, I hear! There
were a couple of interesting presentations concerning music graphics; two
guys from Italy did a pretty good attempt on a 64KB Apple, but all in 6502
assembler unfortunately. It has a fairly impressive menu system, especially
considering the ridiculous 290 x 190 screen resolution or whatever it is.
Some people from Munich have some fairly good-looking stuff, but on an
expensive Cadmus system designed for CAD/CAM use. They want to sell their
software for 10,000Marks or so, but I don't know how good it is. I trust
you know Tom Hall from Wisconsin and his Merganthaler-based commercial
system? He was here and participated on the panel discussion led by Don
Byrd. I learned that Dataland sold out to a Japanese company and now all
that stuff is in Japan. Met Bernard Renaud and enjoyed talking to him.
Hope you're having fun and again, sorry you weren't here. I'm on uucp now
in the Texas wilderness, will send you the address.

Don Coates seem to think that you have had it serviced in the past. It is
currently streaking. Do you know how to fix this, or know who does? I have
already asked Len Bosack (who had told me to talk to Don), but I thought you
might know the easiest solution.

I got your note and will look up the reference tomorrow. I think
I know just the book you are thinking of.

Too bad you can't make the conference.

							   May 15th, 1984

      Dear Mr. Smith,

I have just received your mail from Chris Chafe and I must
tell you that it surprised me quite a lot.
I have have been given a grant from the Fulbright Program and I was sent
the offer of admission of Stanford University from the Italian Committee in
Rome at the beginning of April. There was written that I would have to
decide within few days since the deadline was the 15th of that month, and so
did I, refusing that offer and accepting that one from MIT (I will be
following next year the Ph.D. program in Media Technology related to the new
building for Arts and Techonlogy).
I informed Rome about my choice on April 12 and they should have sent you
back my decision (through IIE of New York) more than ONE month ago !!

That is why your mail surprised me : I feel now a little guilty towards
the other students waiting for an available place. But I really did what I
was asked to do : there must have been a communication problem somewhere
among Rome, IIE and Stanford.
As a strictly confidential information, I could add that I was rather
disappointed by the way the Italian Committee dealt with all this matter.

I wish I could explain to you the reasons of my choice, which have nothing
against Stanford. Rather, they are related to my fairly busy work as a
composer in Europe and to my future plans.
I hope to be able to do that during the next ICMC in Paris : it could also
be the right opportunity for me to meet you.

Looking forward to seeing you during that period,

					Sincerely,

				      Marco Stroppa

Hi, I'm trying to get hooked up with the world from Denton TX where I
run the VAXes for North Texas State University. I have been getting
requests from people for SCORE and MUSIC5 and would like to know if
it's OK with you if I make it generally available to people. Are you
going to ICMC in Paris? How's the music scoring projects ?

Sometime ago, you told me that you were going to do something that would
allow the MS program to run on a microcomputer.
We are thinking of buying a PC of some sort when we get back to
Singapore and it would be great if there is an MS software package
that we could use. We may even be able to convince someone in Singapore
to acquire the hard and software required. Are you doing anything to
make your program more marketable and accessible?
If you need some help,(I am not sure what I can do), I will be free
in August.I am attending the Stanford Sloan Program in September 1984 and
am taking the whole month of August off.

so if you call out of Dart, you gotta start over. READ MONCOM.UPD

I have recently become interested in the printing of music.
From the information I have found so far, music printing is largely a hand
process. Art Samuel told me that you have a very good music publishing
program. Have you published any papers about it? I would be grateful for
any references or other information you can send me.

Gio Wiederhold gave me your name as a possible
source of information on computerized music
transcription. I am interested in a reasonable
method of doing such. This probably involves
interfacing a synthesizer equipped with some
sort of parameter transmission bus to a
microcomputer, or possibly to a mini. So far
I have investigated a number of commercially
available models including:

Syntauri: They offer the AlphaSyntauri system
that has some nice features as a synthesizer
or multi-track recording system, but their
   Composer's Assistant, a musical transcriber
that takes files of music stored in the micro
is totally useless. It actually does turn
these files into written music, but the format
must be edited heavily to turn it into anything
close to something that could be used or having
a professional look. The editing process takes
twice as long as would be taken to do it all
   by hand.

   Fairlight Instruments: I haven't had a demo
of this, but it appears to be a superb system.
The only problem is that it costs around 27k
including hardware, printers and tons of
capabilites that only a serious recording studio
   would be able to use.

Synclavier: I am waiting for the specs on this,
but have heard it has the same problems as Fairlight
   does.

Synergy: They are apparently doing a lot development
in this area and are "supposed" to be releasing
a nice music transcriber. Last I heard it was still
being written, and we all know about vendors and
their "soon to be available" products.

What I'm looking for is a system that will allow one
to play music and have it transcribed into some reasonable
format, and then to be edited quickly into a close to
publishable form(I'm not interested in starting a business,
I just think this is reasonable). Is this too much to ask?
I would be vey grateful for any information on this.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

∂02-Jul-83 2058	HYS perc. symbols
I have now copied on [1,LCS] all of my code 11 library, to wit: PERC.DMD,
CRLN.DMD, and CRS.DMD. Also PICT.MS. Unfortunately, I have no time at
the moment to write documentation on them; suffice to know that those files
are needed to read any of my music I've put on the system.

If any future musicologists wants to know which pieces of mine are buried
in my area on MUSIC5, here is the list:
Promenade (1978), for trombone and perc.
Four Poems on Springtime (1980), for mezzo and chamber orch.
Conjunct Motion (1980), for cl. fg. cor. cb. pfte.
Voyages (1981), for 'cello and strings
Scherzo fantasque (1981), for violin and piano
"Hot ice and wondrous strange snow" (1982), for organ solo
Diurne (1982), for piano four-hands
Dream-troupe (1983), for 'cello and piano

Parts have been extracted wherever relevant.

I'm not at all sure how graceful a clean-up job I'll be able to do before
I leave for good. Certainly I'm the only person who can find anything in
my area. If MS ever gets available elsewhere, I hope to be able to get back
at all of those files in some form.

One more piece on the list:
Intermezzo (1971, rev. 1981), for full orch.

∂06-Jun-83 0135	HYS clean-up and storage
It looks as if I have finished my last significant manuscripting project
before I take off for good, now that I've done both the score and the part
for my new cello-and-piano piece. I certainly would like to show the piece
to you at some point. The piece is definitely vintage Shen.

One thing which I will need to do before leaving is to get everything on
MUSIC5 under [220,HYS] in cold storage, presumably at CCRMA. Please advise
on how to do this. Also, you had advised a while back to make a copy of
[DAT,LCS] on MUSIC5, to be put under [DAT,HYS]. Are those files doing any
good in my area?

Is there any chance that you will have an exportable version of MS under
any form? In that case, maybe I should have a tape copy of MUSIC5:*.*[220,HYS]
to take with me. I will certainly miss your program. Perhaps you could
convince Harvard to set up MS. If it so happens that MS at some point would
be useable on some home machine, I'd certainly would like to hear about it.
It will be very hard to get back to pen-and-ink, especially since I've
started to sketch an orchestration for my 4-hand piece.

∂04-Jun-83 2212	HYS PAGE bug
If you feel like grubbing around MUSIC5, the part extractor runs afoul
DREHC.MS and DREHD.MS [220,HYS]. If you make a control file which reads
DREHC.MS 1 1, and run it through the part extractor for the instrument
CELLO, you'll get an ill mem ref. Running only DREHC or only DREHD does
not cause this problem. Apparently, the problem has to do with the cue
extractor on staff 2 in DREHC. Zeroing P10 for code 2 eliminates the
problem, though it also eliminates the cue. I ended up by doing without
the cue. There may also be some problem with DREMA or DREMB along the
same lines. Somehow, I managed to railroad the entire piece through
(the complete control file is DREAM.).

VRN has run out of paper.

∂14-May-83 2224	HYS MStifying
I was looking for an inverse mordant with a flat on top, and found that you
didn't have one. Ah well; I suppose you have to be a real classicist to
want one of those. I put a flat on top separately.

Why is that, for normal notes, P6← 0 for black notes, and P6← -1 for white
ones, whereas when P4 ← X +200 (for diamond shapes), P6 ←0 for white diamonds,
and P6← -1 for black diamonds?? Unfortunately, there does not seem to be
a nice global command to get all the diamonds the right colour (and believe
it or not, I did find a use for a black diamond!)

Still using MS.OLD for justifying.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get used to using pen and ink again. One project
I'm thinking of is orchestrating my recent 4-hand piece, and choice of paper
format is already a problem in itself. If you can an MS I could use in
Cambridge, I'll never have to worry about pen and ink.

I have found a command `dd' on Unix that probably does what you
were told the `copy' command did. However, there are several format
conversions available. I have appended these below. If ebcdic or ibm
format is more suitable for your machine, let me know. Otherwise, I
shall attempt a direct (ascii) copy.

Extract from manual:
     conv=ascii     convert EBCDIC to ASCII
          ebcdic convert ASCII to EBCDIC
ibm slightly different map of ASCII to EBCDIC

The ASCII/EBCDIC conversion tables are taken from the 256
character standard in the CACM Nov, 1968. The `ibm' conver-
sion, while less blessed as a standard, corresponds better
to certain IBM print train conventions. There is no univer-
     sal solution.

∂02-May-83 0000	HYS Bug in justifying
For a good time, take DREAA.DAT and DREAC.DAT from [220,HYS], read them in MS,
and then justify them. In DREAA, I did J 11 20 200, and in DREAC,
J 11 0 200. Luckily, J did not screw up in MS.OLD. As you can see, I need
to do much to justify my work.

Those files are from my new 'cello-and-piano piece which I hope I can knock
off here before I move. One thing which I hope you will consider some day
is how to extend the end bracket to the 8va sign; you will see the problem
in DREAA. Now that I'm cranking out yet another piece using piano, I am
once again using a lot of 8va bassa; you should really add the O- option
to score input mode. (Even Chopin uses 8va bassa, so I don't think I'm
such a weirdo in writing a lot for that register. I see that you have made
no provision for a 15ma bassa sign at all.)
